A WORLD PREMIERE

directed by

heather demetrios

Opening April 25, 2009 at Stages Theatre in Hollywood

In this 75-minute energetic, existential play, Evan's an atheist, a Marxist, a murderer. Michael's a workaholic, sardonic, murdered. The men confront each other--sparring with words and fists--in one impossible moment in one improbable place: an abandoned greasy spoon floating unthethered in an ocean of empty space. But they're not alone for long. Soon, they meet an old man convinced that good food proves the existence of God and a couple of breathless young lovers waiting for the revolution. The question is: can any of this change Michael's fate and save his life?

This photo was taken outside a Save Mart shopping center in central California. We here at Theatre Yawp feel it is very symbolic of the situation for the arts in the US...and the world. Right now the entire world economy is facing serious challenges and the lives of many people are in limbo. It's a difficult time to make, or see through, long term plans. Unfortunately, this is especially the case for the arts, as this sector of our society always seems to get the short end of the stick, even in prosperous times.

A few months ago, Yawp underwent major changes and, as a result of these changes, our trip to Cambodia this summer has been cancelled. This should in no way be seen as a major setback, as this trip WILL happen when the right team has been assembled and the funding procured. We see this as a great opportunity to make the next trip even better and we are looking forward to the time when the stars align and we can take our passion for the theatre and share it with the people of Cambodia.

In the meantime, Yawp will continue with our season as planned. The World Premiere of "Play With A Knife" by Yawp Founding Member, Zach Fehst, will begin initial readings and workshops next moth and the show will be performed in the spring. "Knife" will be directed by Heather Demetrios and the cast will include former Yawp collaborators.

If you are interested in getting involved in our next production, please email Yawp's Artistic Director, Heather Demetrios, at:

Cambodia Blog

Here is a link for a blog created and oft-updated by a young missionary in Cambodia that Heather and Zach met while they were volunteering at the orphanage...her name is Laura and she's great! The wonderful thing about this blog is that there are tons of pictures from the orphanage because she was there for quite some time and is still there now...great for updates and current pics!

Check out her blog.

CNN, Cambodia, Magic, Burlesque, and Knives OHHH MY!

Burlesque~ Risque? You betcha!!

Yawp in Cambodia 2009 Team (from left to right: Jamie, Heather, Jen, David...Zach is taking the picture and Dedalus and Lexi are MIA)

Yawp is pretty busy right now. We've had a lot of staffing changes (now that's a PC term!) and a lot of irons in the fire (we wouldn't be Theatre Yawp otherwise). Last week, the team for Yawp in Cambodia 2009 had their first meeting and it was pretty grand. It all started with our interview with CNN about the project...the producers at ireport were very intrigued about how burlesque and Cambodian orphans go together. That was fun to explain! We were a bit ghetto about it all, as you can see from the photos...let's just say it involved cell phones, skype, and a webcam! :)

The interview airs on September 27th!! This is the second time CNN has been interested in Yawp and they plan to feature us agin this Christmas right before the holidays!! Our last CNN ireport was viewed by over 200,000 people worldwide!!
Over burritos and wine (Yawp staples), we discussed our fundraising strategy (beg for money), the experiences of Heather and Zach in Cambodia (constipation aside, it was great!), and what our game plan is for curriculum creation and team building! Our website has lots of info. about the project and each of the team members and we are pretty lucky to be bringing some new faces to the Yawp scene. Jamie, Lexi, and Dedalus will be joining Yawp for the first time, although Lexi presented her art at our gallery for Recent Tragic Events. Dedalus will be the lead in Zach's play this April (Play With A Knife), and Jamie is just plain awesome!!! Right now we are working hard to come up with good fundraising ideas and plan to begin begging family and friends for tax-deductible donations to help us on our way!

Jen and David our working hard on Jen's children's play, Magic? Maybe... which opens at the Two Roads Theatre in Studio City on Sunday October 5th. A fabulous play with wacky characters, the cast seems to be having great fun being silly and wearing fairy wings. The play brings a new face to the Yawp stage, Frantz, and includes Amy and Ari of Burlesque fame. Ari was also the Stage Manager for Recent Tragic Events where he kept its director, Heather, from losing her mind.

All in all, good times for Yawp.
